Practical: start at Muelle Uno
By car: parking at Centre Pompidou
Look at the map here: The underground car park in this modern part of Malaga is the ideal base for your Malaga City Trip. There is always space, your car is underground in one of the cleanest and most modern car parks I have ever seen. Plus, you can use spotlessly clean toilets here for free, before taking the stairs (or the lift) up and out to Muelle Uno, Malaga's iconic pier, with its stunning promenade and terraces.
You are now near the colourful cube of this ultra-modern Centre Pompidou and from where you can admire interesting exhibitions of modern art. The Centre Pompidou museum is an absolute must for art lovers! An admission ticket costs ā¬9.

We took a tour of the city with BajaBikes to get an instant overview of all the sights in Malaga, interspersed with visits to bodegas and tapas bars.

Cathedral of Malaga Andalucia
It took 200 years to build Malaga Cathedral. Its full name is 'Santa Iglesia Catedral Basilica de la Encarnación' š¼
You will find Malaga's cathedral at the Plaza del Obispo. Here you really have to go inside and immerse yourself in the grandeur of the world of Angels with a mix of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance.
This video shows you the magical atmosphere in Malaga cathedral:
Walking into Malaga Cathedral, I imagined myself in the majestic Catholic world of the 16th century. The grandeur and splendour of this immense cathedral seems like a city in itself!
Malaga Castle: Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro
In Spain, you will find one or more forts, palaces or castles in just about every region. In Malaga, the ancient walls, watchtowers, the Moorish Alcazaba (literally, Arabic Alcazaba means āfortressā), gardens and the associated Moorish Castillo de Gibralfaro are located in the Gibralfaro hills.
LOOK šļø I filmed this when I went for a terrace with Bart at Muelle Uno in Malaga Puerto, Centre Pompidou: at the end, I zoom in on Mount Gibralfaro, with the Alcazaba and Castillo of Malaga š©
A visit to the Alcazaba, with its stunning views, should not be missed during your holiday in Andalucia or Costa del Sol in Malaga. Look at this stunning setting here.
El JardĆn in Malaga
Want to be even more immersed in time? Then you should definitely visit El JardĆn!
El JardĆn is an authentic 1887 establishment where time has stood still. You feel like you are in Eurodisney: the atmosphere is heart-warmingly old-fashionedš
Malaga Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre of MĆ”laga is a medium-sized theatre whose ācaveaā or floors, the orchestra decorated with large marble slabs, and the āscaenaā (the scene where the performance took place) are preserved. At the back of the set you'll find decorated columns and sculptures.
The Teatro Romano takes you back to the 1st century AD, when this Teatro was built on top of a bathhouse. Today, you can still see the typical opus spicatum floor (herringbone masonry) and the wooden floor of the scaena (stage), as it originally looked.

For centuries, MƔlaga's Teatro Romano remained hidden under the streets and houses on the slope of the Alcazaba. In 1940, during the construction of the Casa de Cultura, this Roman theatre was discovered. Even today, part of the theatre remains under the foundations of the Casa de Cultura.
So much history to discover here: from bathhouse to Teatro (1st century AD) to salt storage basins (3rd century AD) to necropolis with double-sided tile tombs (5th century AD).
You can visit the archaeological site of MƔlaga's Roman Theatre for free.

Mercado de Atarazanas
If you ask Malaga locals what you should definitely visit as a tourist, they invariably reply that the Mercado de Atarazanas (shipyards market) is Malaga's must-see.
Here you are in the middle of Malaga's local gastronomy: fish, meat, vegetables and sun-ripened fruit can be bought at very democratic prices.
Here you will find more information about the stands at the market for meat, fish or vegetables.

Malaga beaches: Playa de la Malagueta
Stretching over 1,200 metres of sandy beach, this delightful Malaga city beach is an absolute hit!
Playa de la Malagueta is the place after your busy street visit, to enjoy sun, sea, beach and celebrate your life, together with your loved ones. If you are at Centre Pompidou and you walk via the Muelle Uno towards Farola (lighthouse), you will see past the lighthouse the beautiful wide and long beach of La Malagueta.
The mountains are right behind Playa de la Malagueta, which protects this beach from fresh northerly winds and allows great beach weather in winter.
In the evening, you can stroll blissfully along the promenade Playa de la Malagueta, where you can eat fresh seafood at one of the many chiringuitos (beach restaurants). They generally provide excellent service and quality dishes.
The absolute best can be found here at the Malaga port: Trocadero š«
Flamenco Show
Flamenco is the music and dance genre of southern Spain. Although Seville is the cradle of flamenco in Spain, you will find spectacular flamenco performances in every Spanish city. In Malaga, too, you can indulge in a professional flamenco show. Just before or during the shows, you can also eat and drink.
Flamenco still has something mysterious, like the origin of the name āFlamencoā, which we are still guessing about today.
According to Spanish writer Blas Infante, the name āāFlamencoā comes from the Arabic āFelah-mengusā, meaning āwandering peasantā š
In turn, the poet Antonio Machado claims that the word āFlamencoā was used by Andalusians to identify gypsies; while gypsies used the word āGachoā for Andalusian š¤Ŗ
Here you will find some good organisations of Flamenco shows in Malaga, but there are certainly others where you will be received just fine.
Plaza de la Merced and Casa natal de Pablo Picasso
This beautiful square has housed the city's weekly market since the 15th century. Bart and I usually come here for aperitifs during our day trip to Malaga. It is always pleasant to linger among the Spaniards in one of the many bars and terraces in this old square.
Plaza de la Merced is in the centre of Malaga, in the La Merced district, where at number 15 of this square you can also visit the birthplace of famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso. Today, the house houses a museum.
Here you will find all the interesting locations in Malaga linked to Picasso, including his birthplace in Plaza de la Merced.
There is so much more to experience in Malaga. Not only in the historical city centre but also just outside it you will find interesting sights.
Outside the centre of Malaga
Malaga Botanical Gardens

Just outside the centre of Malaga are the breathtakingly beautiful botanical gardens. The estate covers some 23 hectares and grows a variety of fauna and flora from 5 different contents. These gardens have existed since 1855.
